So the Democrats are obstructing the opening of the Government. They are opposing a Continuing Resolution (to date - as of 10/28/25 - they have voted against it 13 times). Why? because they are making a bunch of political demands. They are LITERALLY holding the government hostage and trying to force the Republicans to roll back measures that were put forward (legally, and Democratically) in the recent "Big Beautiful Bill". The Democrats hated that. So, in my view, they are doing this as revenge. The house passed the CR. The senate is stalemated. Why? because it needs 60 votes to pass. The Republicans have 53 votes. Only 7 more Democrats need to vote for it and the government can open. But no one has moved yet.
So how long will this shutdown last?
The longest U.S. government shutdown lasted 35 days, from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019. This partial shutdown occurred during the presidency of (you guessed it...) Donald Trump due to an impasse over funding for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Knowing the Democrats like I do, they will try to surpass this previous "record" this time. The Democrats LOVE to shut down the government under Trump, because they HATE him.
We shall see.
